Greening McGill

Greening McGillHello everyone,

Here are the minutes from last night's meeting, as well as some info for people going to gault.

Gault:

1) As you've probably heard by now, we had to change our plans slightly. We will be renting a seven-person van, and everyone who can't fit will be going on the bus. Then the van will shuttle people from the bus station to the chalet.

2) As previously planned, please meet at Gertz at 5:15 on Friday. You should either bring dinner for Friday night, or buy something at Gertz. We will eat while on route. Please don't be late! That will just make things more complicated for me.

3) I found directions for getting to Gault, so I'll be going in the van and trying to navigate. Michelle will be leading the people who are taking the bus. Michelle-please remember to find directions from the chalet to the bus station.

4) The simplest thing to do about groceries will be to buy them at the grocery store at Gault. We will make a run there on Friday night. When you're planning your meal, please keep the following in mind:
- Bring a reusable bag to carry groceries, instead of using plastic bags.
- Try to buy organic and/or local products (e.g. Quebec rather than New Zealand apples).
- As much as possible, select products with minimal packaging and processing.
- If you buy non-vegan products (e.g. dairy, eggs), try to pick those that are organic and/or derive from free range animals. Also consider dairy substitutes such as rice, almond, or soy milk, soy cheeses & yogourts, vegetable margarine and tofu.
- Be creative! Share recipes! http://vegweb.com, www.ivu.org/recipes, www.veganchef.com

For those of you who were on the waiting list and are not yet assigned to a cooking group, don't worry--we'll assign you when we meet on Friday. Hopefully your other group members will have planned a dish already, so you won't need to bring a recipe or anything.

5) I don't know what the bedding situation is at Gault, so please bring a sleeping bag and a pillow in case blankets aren't provided.

Now on to the rest of the minutes:

Gorilla Gardening:

Kristen would like to start a club for gorilla gardening, which is where you go out and plant things wherever there's space. There will probably be a meeting in mid-February to organize the group and maybe start fundraising because some money for seeds and tools will be necessary. Keep your ears open!

General Assembly:

A bunch of environmental groups have written a proposal for a sustainability policy that will be brought up at the GA on February first. We need to get some signatures so that this question can be on the agenda and to raise awareness. Sophie will book a table for sometime next week. We will also get signatures at Activities Night, when we give away cookies on Friday (see lug-a-mug section) and at Ethical Alternatives Day.

Activities night:

Here is the revised schedule:

4-6: Saima and Gabrielle
6-8: Sophie and Warren

Our table is on the second floor of Shatner on the wall opposite you when you walk into the cafeteria.

Lug-A-Mug:

We'll continue the campaign we started last semester to encourage people to bring their own mugs to school if they're going to buy coffee. We'll be tabling outside Tim Hortons in Redpath basement on Friday and giving a cookie to anyone who brings their own mug. We'll also be collecting signatures for the GA. Here's the schedule:

9:30-10:30 Sophie and Gabrielle
10:30 - 11:30 Michelle
11:30 - 12:30 Danielle and Tim

If someone could volunteer to keep Michelle company, that would be great.

Recto-Verso:
We made signs to put by the the boxes for one sided paper that we've put by various photocopiers around campus. WE're hoping this will better explain the purpose of the boxes and more people will use them.

If anyone has paper that's blank on one side that we could make into scrap paper notebooks, you can donate it to us! We'd love to have it!

We'd like to resurrect a project we started last year where we gave gifts of recycled paper to departments in order to encourage them to always buy recycled paper. Michelle will bring materials for making cards to go with the paper to the meeting next week. Michelle will also contact QPIRG about buying some recycled paper from them at cost.

We've discovered that some classes are still requiring single sided essays, which is now against university policy, so we actually have an excuse to do something about it. We'd like to compile a list of courses/profs who require single sided essays, and then do announcements in their classes about the policy. So far we know of the following classes:
The entire french lit department
EAPR 250

Michelle will put an announcement in the SSMU newsletter asking people to write to us if their profs are requiring single-sided work.
Danielle will look into who writes and enforces the academic integrity policy, because he/she might be able to help us.
Please let us know if your professor is requiring single-sided work!

When we table next week and at Activities Night and at Ethical Alternative Day, we'll be advertising Recto-Verso.

Kyoto:
A bunch of environmental groups are collaborating to do something for Kyoto's birthday, which is Feb. 16th. So far ideas include a debate among political parties, birthday cakes, a speaker, a dance and getting people to spell "Kyoto" or "I (heart) Kyoto" on lower field.
